Reservoir water levels returning to normal, irrigation dept. confirms

The Department of Irrigation says water levels in reservoirs across the island are returning to normal, with no reservoir currently at flood level.

Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) L. S. Sooriyabandara said rainfall of 50–100 mm was recorded in major catchment areas over the past 24 hours, including the Kelani, Kalu, Gin, Nilwala and Attanagalu basins.

This is not expected to cause any significant rise in river levels.

Spill gates have been opened in about 30 major reservoirs—such as Rajanganaya, Deduru Oya, Nachchaduwa, Senanayake Samudraya, Weheragala and Lunugamvehera to safely regulate water levels.

He said the releases are being managed carefully, considering expected rainfall, and urged the public to stay alert as weather conditions continue to evolve.
