GoSL briefs UNHRC: Talks underway on Truth-Reconciliation Comm.

Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN in Geneva, Switzerland, Ambassador Sumith Dassanayake informed the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) that discussions are underway to formulate a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. 

He also informed that public consultations are ongoing on the initial draft of the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill, which will lead to the eventual repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act (as amended).

He stated thus while addressing the 61st Session of the Council which held its high-level segment from Monday (23) to Wednesday (25).

He highlighted Sri Lanka’s continued journey towards economic, social and political transformation. He reassured “Sri Lanka’s commitment to advancing ethical governance, national unity and reconciliation while opposing external action”. 

Highlighting the Government’s priority for reconciliation and national unity, Dassanayake briefed the Council on measures taken to strengthen domestic institutions vis-à-vis the Office on Missing Persons, the Office for Reparations, and the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation. 

Reaffirming Sri Lanka’s readiness to engage with the Council, the Office of the High Commissioner for HR and the broader international community in a spirit of partnership and mutual respect, he reassured Sri Lanka’s continued commitment in advancing reconciliation and reform through domestic processes.
