The third edition of the Francophonie Film Festival will be held on 27 and 28 March at Alliance Française de Colombo, offering free public access with English subtitles.
Organised by the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka and the Maldives in partnership with the High Commission of Canada in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, the Embassy of Romania in Sri Lanka and the Embassy of Switzerland in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, the festival will present three feature films and four short films. The programme is open to both Francophone and non-Francophone audiences and includes films of different genres from multiple countries, with two films rated for audiences aged 16 and above.
The festival will open on Friday, 27 March at 6.00 p.m. with the Canadian feature film Falcon Lake (16+), a coming-of-age drama set during a summer by a lakeside. On Saturday, 28 March, a selection of short films will be screened from 2.30 p.m., followed by the French feature film Divertimento at 3.30 p.m., which is based on the story of a young woman pursuing a career as an orchestra conductor. The festival will conclude with the Romanian historical drama Libertate (16+), which revisits events of the 1989 Romanian Revolution.
The event is organised in connection with the International Day of La Francophonie and highlights the diversity of French-language cultures through cinema, promoting dialogue and cultural exchange among participating countries.
French is spoken by more than 396 million people worldwide and continues to attract learners in Sri Lanka, reflecting ongoing cultural connections with Francophone countries.
Organisers stated that the festival aims to promote cultural diversity and provide audiences with access to a range of contemporary French-language films.
