Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara stated that the unrest at Kuruwita Prison has been brought under control after prison authorities opened fire using minimal force.

At least two people were killed and four others were injured and admitted to hospital during the incident.

The unrest first broke out on the night of 06 August before tensions escalated again this morning (07). Prison officials used tear gas to restore order.

Authorities also reported damage to the prison hospital during the unrest.
