Three arrested over telephone cable thefts

Police have arrested three suspects in separate operations in connection with a series of telephone cable thefts and other property-related offences in Ragama and Moratuwa.

In the first incident, two suspects wanted over the theft of cables from telecommunication towers were arrested during a raid carried out by officers attached to the Ragama Police on 13 June. 

Police stated 17 gs and 700 mgs of the drug known as 'Ice' was found in the possession of the suspects at the time of their arrest.

Subsequent investigations revealed the two suspects had allegedly cut and stolen telecommunication cables worth approximately Rs 922,750.


The suspects, aged 27 and 34, are residents of Ratupaswala and Kadawatha.


Questioning of the suspects led officers to recover a stock of stolen cable parts, which have been taken into police custody.


Ragama Police are continuing investigations into the incident.


Meanwhile, Moratuwa Police arrested another suspect wanted in connection with several property crimes, including the theft of telephone cables.


The suspect was taken into custody by a team of officers engaged in crime prevention duties within the Moratuwa Police Division after he was observed acting suspiciously.


Police investigations have linked the suspect to several incidents involving the theft of telephone cables valued at around Rs 180,000, as well as housebreaking and other property thefts within the Moratuwa area. 

The suspect is a 51-year-old resident of Rawathawatta. 

Based on information revealed during questioning, police recovered a stolen television set and a stock of copper wire believed to have been taken during the thefts. Further investigations are being conducted by Moratuwa Police.
