The government has launched plans for a series of development projects at and around the Hakgala Botanical Garden aimed at boosting tourism while protecting the area’s sensitive mountain ecosystem.

A special field inspection of the botanical garden was conducted under the direction of Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody, during which several proposals for the planned development were reviewed.

Among the key proposals is the establishment of a dedicated conservation centre for plant species endemic to the Hakgala region, along with a basic laboratory to facilitate research and scientific studies on these species.

Authorities are also planning to introduce a network of new walking trails and nature pathways, designed to give local and foreign visitors greater access to the area while minimizing the impact on its natural landscape.

Greenhouses are expected to be established to conserve rare and endemic plant species identified in the region. The proposed facilities will also provide opportunities for researchers and the public to learn more about the area’s plant and animal species.

The development plan envisages the Hakgala premises becoming a “zero-emission” zone, where visitors can experience the natural environment without activities that could adversely affect the existing ecosystem, according to the Environment Ministry.

Officials say the initiative is intended to strike a balance between tourism development and environmental conservation, while promoting sustainable tourism and protecting the biodiversity of Sri Lanka’s central highlands for future generations.
