Police have seized more than 2,300 firearms and over 23,000 kg of narcotics during island-wide operations carried out so far this year, Sri Lanka Police reported.

Since 1 January, officers have recovered 2,341 firearms, including 73 T-56 assault rifles, 59 revolvers and 2,126 other weapons.

Large quantities of drugs were also seized, including heroin, crystal methamphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and hashish.

Nearly 790,000 people were searched during the operations, leading to the arrest of 6,641 suspects linked to crimes and more than 73,000 individuals with outstanding warrants.
