Health experts warn of increased risks during heatwave

02 Apr 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Health officials have issued warnings to the public about the dangers of extreme heat, especially for individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases, and cancers.

Consultant-Community Physician Dr. Inoka Suraweera emphasized that exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat cramps, exhaustion, and even fatal strokes, potentially worsening health conditions or causing death.

She urged vulnerable groups to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, coffee, and sugary drinks, and be cautious when working outdoors.

Dr. Chandani Withana recommended consuming electrolyte-rich drinks like coconut water and eating hydrating foods such as cucumber and watermelon.

Authorities advise avoiding outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm, wearing light-colored cotton clothing, and using umbrellas or hats for protection.
