Sri Lanka High Commissioner to Australia Yasoja Gunasekera officially handed over the Commission of Appointment to Chirantha Weerawardena as Sri Lanka’s new Honorary Consul in Perth on 19 December , 2025, at the Sri Lanka High Commission in Canberra. His consular jurisdiction covers Western Australia.

Weerawardena is a mining engineer with 33 years of experience in the mining industry and holds academic qualifications from the University of Moratuwa and Curtin University. High Commissioner Gunasekera highlighted his potential role in strengthening Sri Lanka’s engagement with Western Australia and attracting investment in Sri Lanka’s minerals sector.

The new Honorary Consul also expressed his commitment to supporting consular services for the Sri Lankan community of nearly 20,000 people in Western Australia, in coordination with the High Commission in Canberra.
