The Department of Motor Traffic has taken steps to issue green-background number plates for electric motor vehicles.

Commissioner General Air Vice Marshal (Retired) Thushara Fernando stated that around 8,000 green-background number plates have been printed so far.

The decision was taken following a directive from the Ministry of Transport, he noted.

The relevant notification has been forwarded for publication in the Gazette, while the Inspector General of Police has also been requested to inform all police stations that the green-background number plates are legally valid.
