Police have clarified that children under 12, people below 135 centimetres in height and those with medical recommendations against seat belt use are exempt from the expressway seat belt requirement.

However, Deputy Inspector General W.P.J. Senadheera advised exempted passengers to use suitable safety restraints where possible.

Motorists were also advised to maintain a safe distance, especially during rain.
