Comic cakes, which draw on comics for inspiration (think Marvel-inspired designs and vintage comic book art), are becoming increasingly popular in the baking world. What could be the cause of this trend? Could it be the range of vibrant colours used in the designs or perhaps it is the intense attention to detail seen in these bakes? Let's explore a whole new world of baking artistry.
Comic cakes, frequently referred to as cartoon cakes, are regular cakes with an infusion of fun – adornments in the form of lively 2D drawings that imitate a cartoon. The amazing Cecilia Tanujaya deserves a huge round of applause for starting this incredible cake craze. Even the most basic cake is transformed into an aesthetically pleasing artistic masterpiece with her marvellous touch.
Not only do comic cakes make for aesthetically pleasing treats, but they are also a great way to show off one’s creativity and skill. Whether you are a fan of comics or simply appreciate the beauty of the craft, comic cakes are sure to impress.
Tips to ‘comic’ your cakes
Here is a secret shared by a popular cake artist, Tigga Maccormack, from her viral TikTok tutorial.
Tigga started with some leftover cakes, cut triangles out of them, and stacked them on top of one another to get the shape of a piece of cake. After sandwiching it with pink ganache, the same ganache was used to cover the entire piece. After smoothening it out, the cake was covered with fondant. To add more colour to the overall cake, various colours were then added including a dripping icing look. She finished off with a lovely topping of a cherry made from fondant.
Then came the most interesting part. Tigga used an extruder to produce lengthy black fondant stripes as the outline of the cake. To create this effect, it was key to adjust the colour along each edge. Keep in mind that adding more details will yield more outlines.
To create this mesmerising effect, the coverage of the cake needs to be strong and contrasting. The contour is what makes this effect stand out from all the other basic or not-so-basic-looking cakes.
Some tips to avoid any mistakes when working on your cake
- Make sure the cake is tall before creating the dripping icing look.
- Use a palette knife to smoothen the dripping icing.
- If you do not achieve perfect black icing for making borders, you can also use dark chocolate ganache.
- Don’t worry if the edges are not too smooth, they will get covered by the black borders you create.
Now you know everything you need to start your comic cake journey. Keep in mind that the most important tool for a better outcome is to be flexible in creativity.
