The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for severe lightning in the Uva Province and the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota.

The advisory, issued at 11.30 a.m. today (30), will remain in effect until 11.30 p.m.

Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning and temporary localised strong winds are expected in several areas.

The public is advised to seek shelter indoors, avoid open spaces and water bodies, and stay away from trees during thunderstorms. People are also urged to avoid using electrical appliances connected to power outlets.
