Motorcyclists currently account for the highest number of road accident deaths in Sri Lanka, according to the National Council for Road Safety.

Police recorded 1,626 road accidents between January 1 and July 31, 2026, up from 1,585 during the same period in 2025.

A total of 749 motorcyclists died in road accidents during the period, including 13 people under 18.

Authorities have urged motorcycle riders and pillion riders to wear safety helmets that meet required standards and carry the SLS logo.
