A major development project has been launched to expand and modernise Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), with completion expected between 2026 and 2027.

The project is expected to increase the airport's annual passenger handling capacity by around 500,000 passengers and reduce congestion during peak travel periods.

Upgrades will include expanded arrival and departure terminals, additional check-in counters, new remote boarding gates, upgraded immigration facilities and the introduction of e-gates.
