Former rugby Captain Priyantha at the helm
Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage appointed the new National Sports Council (NSC) on Friday (14) in accordance with the provisions of the Sports Law No.25 of 1973, with the aim of advising the Minister on matters relating to the promotion, development, and governance of sports in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan rugby legend and former President of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) Priyantha Ekanayake has been appointed as the new Chairman of the NSC.
The following prominent figures have also been appointed as members of the council:
- Samantha Nanayakkara – University of Colombo Professor in Sports Studies and Sports Psychologist
- Rukman Wekadapola – International boxing referee
- Sidath Wettimuny – Former Sri Lankan cricketer
- Chanaka Jayamaha – Colombo Dockyard Non-Executive Independent Director and civil/commercial lawyer
- Rohan Abeykoon – Former rugby player and former Chairman of the National Rugby Selection Committee
- Niroshan Wijekoon – Former badminton player and former national champion (singles)
- Murad Ismail – Former member of the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka
- Roshan Mahanama – Former Sri Lankan cricketer and former ICC match referee
- C. Ratnamudali – University of Moratuwa Lecturer and former Secretary of the Sri Lanka Beach Volleyball Association
- Sriyani Kulawansa – Former Sri Lankan hurdler, Olympian, and Commonwealth Games Silver medallist
- Malik J. Fernando – MJF Group Co-Chairman and Dilmah Tea Managing Director
- Shanitha Fernando – Former rugby player
