Members of Parliament and staff attended today’s (22) session dressed in pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, globally recognized each October.
Prime Minister (PM) Harini Amarasuriya and Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne were symbolically presented with awareness badges and wristbands at the event organized by the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus.
All MPs were given the opportunity to wear the symbolic items, while Parliament has also scheduled a special adjournment debate from 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm on the importance of breast cancer prevention.
Medical experts highlighted that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Sri Lanka, with around 15 new cases and 3 deaths daily, stressing the importance of early detection and monthly self-examinations.
The Caucus has further requested the Ministry of Education (MOE) to raise awareness in schools, aligning with national and global efforts to promote prevention and early diagnosis.
