A special District Development Committee meeting at the Batticaloa District Secretariat reviewed and addressed key challenges related to public transportation and highways in the district.

Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake and Industries Minister Sunil Handunneththi chaired the meeting, which included officials from transport, highways, water supply, and civil aviation sectors.

Ministry officials discussed strategies to develop a regulated, high-quality public transport system aligned with public needs, alongside proposals to improve accessibility and leverage the district’s tourism potential, including better use of the international airport.

Following the meeting, the ministers inspected the Batticaloa Bus Depot, where several refurbished buses were reintroduced to service, aiming to strengthen local transport options.

Minister Handunneththi emphasised national unity and pledged continued commitment to development efforts benefiting all communities.
