V Eleven One: Elevating vegetarian cuisine

19 May 2025 | By Venessa Anthony

V Eleven One, located in Ratmalana, is a haven for discerning diners who seek indulgence without compromise. With its artful blend of sustainability, sophistication, and plant-based innovation, this is not just a vegetarian restaurant. It’s a statement. And we were there for it.

From the moment we stepped into the tastefully appointed space, it was clear that V Eleven One wasn’t playing by the tired tropes of vegetarian dining. This wasn’t the patchouli-scented, sprout-sandwich stereotype of old. No, this was elevated vegetarianism, rooted in the soil of mindful living, but reaching ambitiously for the stars.

“This has been in the works for over 10 years,” said Lalanka Group Chairperson and founder Sagara Lunuwila, the mastermind behind the restaurant. Best known for his work in Sri Lanka’s water management sector, Lunuwila said the idea for V Eleven One came from years of frustration with how limited vegetarian food was in most local restaurants.

“In Sri Lanka, vegetarian usually means dhal curry, rice, and the occasional thosai,” he said. “But when I travelled, especially to places like Malaysia and China, I saw how diverse and satisfying plant-based food could be. I wanted to bring that same variety here.”

He was clear on another point: “People think vegetarian food isn’t filling or nutritious. That’s not true. It’s all about how you prepare it. At V Eleven One, we want to change how people see vegetarian food, starting with the menu.”

The space

First impressions count, and V Eleven One made a strong one. The interiors are quietly elegant – warm woods, lush greenery, and soft lighting come together to create a space that feels both contemporary and grounded. Large windows allow the restaurant to be flooded with natural light during the day, while evenings offer a more intimate glow.

The layout is smart and spacious, with room for up to 120 guests – though you wouldn’t know it unless you counted. There’s no sense of being crammed in, and the overall effect is one of calm, airy comfort.

An added bonus, especially for Colombo’s drivers constantly circling the block in search of a space: Ample parking. It’s a detail that might seem minor until you’re late to a birthday dinner because of it.

The philosophy

Before we even dive into the food, a moment must be taken to appreciate the ethos behind it. All produce at V Eleven One is grown organically and pesticide-free at their own estate, a rarity in the industry, and one that speaks to the team’s commitment to wellness, sustainability, and transparency. There’s an honesty to their approach, and you can taste it in every bite.

The staff, from front-of-house to kitchen, radiate warmth and purpose. They’re not just serving you food – they’re sharing something they believe in. This sense of integrity permeates the dining experience and elevates the meal from something transactional to something intimate and intentional.

The food

Now, let’s talk about the stars of the show. Our meal was a globe-trotting, flavour-packed joyride, drawing from Cajun, Indian, Italian, and Mediterranean influences, and yet, it all felt surprisingly cohesive.

We began with the veggie quesadillas with roasted pineapple salsa, which were filled with a medley of Cajun-spiced local vegetables. Smoky, tender, and just the right amount of heat. The roasted pineapple salsa was a revelation, bright, juicy and complex, balancing the earthiness of the vegetables beautifully. It was the sort of starter that quietly surprises you and stays with you long after.

The grilled tandoori paneer and paratha dish arrived like a vibrant festival on a plate. The paneer was gorgeously charred and aromatic, served with a flaky paratha and an ensemble cast of accompaniments: Gotukola sambol, cooling mint chutney, creamy raita, and a crisp salad. Each element had its moment, but together they harmonised like a well-rehearsed orchestra. There’s something deeply comforting about this dish, and yet it felt elevated – like a nostalgic meal all dressed up for a fancy evening out.

Spaghetti with vegan meatballs is a classic made cruelty-free – and trust us, nothing was lost in translation. The vegan meatballs were rich and meaty in texture without being overly processed, nestled in a silky tomato sauce that clung lovingly to the spaghetti. It’s always a gamble to veganise something so iconic, but V Eleven One pulls it off without a hitch.

We’ll admit, we didn’t expect to be wowed by a Greek salad. But this one was a quiet show-stealer. The ingredients, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, bell peppers, onion, black olives, and feta, were as fresh as you could hope for, and the Italian dressing gave it a tangy lift. What elevated it, though, was the sheer quality of each element. You could taste the sunshine in the vegetables and the restraint in the dressing. Nothing drowned; everything sang.

The grand finale was indulgence personified. A luxurious trio of chocolate layers – dark, milk, and white – stacked in a perfectly chilled glass. Each layer was silky smooth, with just the right balance between bitter and sweet. Not overly sugary, this dessert managed to feel both decadent and refined. The portion was generous enough to share, but good luck convincing anyone to give up a spoonful.

The experience

Dining at V Eleven One feels like being welcomed into someone’s very thoughtful, very stylish home. The service is attentive without being overbearing, and there’s a palpable pride in what’s being served, and rightly so. Every dish reflects care, creativity, and an awareness of what today’s conscious diner wants.

There’s something special about knowing that the food on your plate was grown ethically, handled with respect, and prepared with intention. But V Eleven One doesn’t lean on virtue alone – the food stands proudly on its own merit. This is a place where flavour meets philosophy, where every bite feels good in more ways than one.

Vegetarian or not, V Eleven One is well worth the trip to Ratmalana. It’s the kind of restaurant that gently challenges your assumptions about meatless cuisine, showing you that it can be bold, adventurous, comforting, and elegant all at once.

It’s ideal for a long lunch with family, a sophisticated dinner date, or even a solo meal with a good book and better food. And with its generous seating, parking, and warm hospitality, it’s as practical as it is poetic.

Where dining out is increasingly performative or gimmicky, V Eleven One stands out by being quietly brilliant, no tricks, just truth. This is vegetarian dining redefined.
