The biggest night of the fashion industry, the Met Gala is held annually on the first Monday of May. Dedicated to raising funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, this night is where fashion designers and guests collaborate to come up with the best costumes to fit the year’s theme. Ahead of 2023’s Met Gala which will be held on Monday, May 1 in New York, let’s take a trip down memory lane to get a glimpse of the best looks over the years.

Princess Diana made her Met Gala debut wearing Dior, shortly after making headlines following her divorce from Prince Charles. In keeping with the year’s theme of paying homage to Christian Dior, Princess Diana wore a lingerie-inspired silk navy blue gown accessorised with sapphire jewellery. The gown, dubbed to be a ‘revenge gown’ is currently housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Rihanna in Guo Pei – 2015
Going viral for its yellowish appearance that pranksters took advantage of to photoshop into an egg, Rihanna’s dress worn at the Met Gala of 2015 was designed by a Chinese fashion designer Guo Pei for that year’s theme, ‘China through the looking glass’.
Anne Hathaway in Ralph Lauren – 2015
Combining a sleek yet angelic theme in custom-designed Ralph Lauren, the Oscar winner took her look to another level with the golden evening dress featuring a hood.
Blake Lively in Versace – 2018

Zendaya in Tommy Hilfiger – 2019
The ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ star and her stylist took the 2019 Met Gala look to new heights. The enchanting Cinderella gown customised by Tommy Hilfiger perfectly complemented the bag the actress was carrying which was in the shape of a pumpkin carriage.
Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell – 2019
Lady Gaga, who’s known for her outlandish looks, took to the red carpet of 2019’s Met Gala with a performance – playfully swapping four dresses, each designed by designer Brandon Maxwell. Kim Kardashian in Balenciaga – 2021
Casting doubt about her identity dressed in complete undercover mode, Kim Kardashian made her Met Gala 2021 red carpet look the talk of the town. The KKW Cosmetics founder did a solo red carpet walk with an all-black head-to-toe Balenciaga teamed with a ponytail and heels.
Blake Lively in Versace – 2022
Having an extraordinary moment at the 2022 Met Gala, Lively hit the red carpet with a turquoise Versace gown inspired by the Statue of Liberty. Later, the giant gown was transformed from copper to blue, inspired by the oxidation process of the Statue of Liberty.
