Reliable access to safe drinking water has been successfully restored in cyclone-affected areas of Puttalam and Nuwara Eliya, thanks to targeted interventions by the Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Sri Lanka (A-PAD SL) and its international partners.
Following Cyclone Ditwah, Sri Lanka faced urgent humanitarian challenges, with floodwaters contaminating water sources, disrupting supply systems, and increasing the risk of waterborne diseases among vulnerable populations, including families and schoolchildren.
In response, A-PAD SL launched focused water security projects in the two districts. In Puttalam, particularly in the Karuwalgaswewa Divisional Secretariat Division, 360 family water filters donated by Aquabox were distributed to flood-affected households.
20 community filtration units were installed at schools and public centers, capable of serving up to 500 people daily, ensuring sustained access to clean water.
Meanwhile, in Nuwara Eliya, A-PAD SL partnered with Wine to Water to distribute 500 DROP water filters to schools across several Divisional Secretariat divisions, including Walapane, Nildandahinna, and Kotmale.
Prior assessments highlighted schools as priority sites due to limited water access, which posed health risks to students and staff.
Training sessions with school principals, teachers, and students were conducted to promote sustainable use and ensure long-term benefits.
All initiatives were carried out in close coordination with key agencies such as the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), the National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC), and local government authorities, facilitating efficient humanitarian response.
