Sri Lanka Rugby registration suspended

Sri Lanka Rugby registration suspended

23 May 2025 | BY Staff Writer

Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage has suspended the registration of Sri Lanka Rugby with immediate effect through a Gazette issued under the Sports Law No. 25 of 1973.

The move also revokes the appointment of Prof. (Rear Admiral) Shemal Fernando as Competent Authority, replacing him with a 5-member Working Task Force. Their sole mandate is to adopt a new constitution for Sri Lanka Rugby, developed by a World Rugby-backed Constitutional Review Group and approved by all stakeholders.

The Task Force includes Priyantha Ekanayake (Chairman), Suresh Subramaniam, M. R. Latiff, Dinal Phillips PC, and Rohan Abayakoon. They are authorised to manage the sport’s affairs until fresh elections are held within 90 days of the new constitution's adoption.
