  • Depression to move towards India

The Railways Department noted that train services along the main line will continue to be restricted.

Train operations between Kandy and Colombo have been affected for several days due a train derailment and owing to earth slips reported at several locations along the main line.

The Railways had announced that train services on the upcountry line would be restricted yesterday. Ten train services between Kandy and Colombo Fort, and between Kandy and Polgahawela, had been cancelled yesterday morning. Train operations were to remain restricted until yesterday afternoon due to earth slips reported at several locations along the upcountry railway line. The train service between Colombo Fort and Badulla would operate only between Peradeniya and Badulla yesterday morning. Five train journeys, including the two night mail trains scheduled to run yesterday from Colombo Fort to Badulla and from Badulla to Colombo Fort, have been cancelled.

Meanwhile, the low-pressure area located near the Northern coast of Sri Lanka was expected to intensify further and move west Northwestward and was likely to develop into a depression over the coastal areas of Northern Tamil Nadu and Southern Andhra Pradesh during yesterday evening, the Meteorology Department said.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers were to occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western and Southern Provinces and in the Jaffna and Mannar Districts.  Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75 millimetres was likely at some places in these areas. Showers or thundershowers would occur elsewhere of the island after 1 p.m. Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kilometres per hour could be expected at times over the Western slopes of the Central hills and in the Western, Northern, North Central, North Western and Southern Provinces and in the Trincomalee District.

Therefore, the general public was requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
