Over 40% of Sri Lanka’s 3.1 million internal migrants moved due to marriage, mainly to Colombo and Gampaha districts, according to the 2024 Census.

Other key reasons included employment (17%), family needs (16%), and returning to permanent residences (11%).

The report also noted education, resettlement, and disaster-related migrations as smaller contributors, with marriage emerging as the leading cause across most districts.
