Health experts urge public to stay hydrated amid high temperatures in Sri Lanka

As high temperatures continue to affect parts of Sri Lanka, health experts are advising the public to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo emphasized the importance of frequent water intake to prevent dehydration during the hot weather.

He also recommended consuming fresh fruit juices such as king coconut, lime, orange, mandarin, and pomegranate, along with traditional porridge varieties to maintain hydration and nutrition.

Dr. Perera advised wearing light-colored cotton clothing, limiting exposure to direct sunlight, and staying in shaded areas to minimize the impact of the heat. He further suggested bathing multiple times a day or wetting the skin with water to keep the body cool.

To reduce health risks, outdoor activities should be avoided especially between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., when temperatures peak. Those working outdoors are encouraged to take regular breaks in shaded areas.

The doctor warned that excessive heat can lead to dehydration, headaches, vomiting, and fatigue, particularly among children and the elderly. He urged the public to seek medical advice promptly if any health issues arise related to heat exposure.
