- Govt. outlines an ambitious plan to be competitive in 2030 global mkt.
- 40k new acres in North by 2027, Rs. 600 m to be allocated from Budget ’26
The Government aims to achieve a target of 4,200 million coconuts by 2030, according to the Ministry of Plantation.
Ministry Secretary Prabath Chandrakeerthi noted that by 2030, it is projected that the value of the global coconut market would rise to around $ 19 billion, and that Sri Lanka should therefore aim to increase its coconut production to remain competitive.
He further told a media briefing yesterday (26) that as part of these efforts, measures are being taken to improve coconut production through the ‘Northern Coconut Triangle’, covering all five districts of the Northern Province.
This year, next year (2026), and in 2027, a total of 40,000 new acres of coconut will be cultivated in the Northern Province. While Rs. 500 million has already been allocated for 2025 through the Budget, the ongoing 2026 Budget discussions aim to allocate Rs. 600 million for 2026.
“Through re-establishing the coconut industry in the North, we are planning to increase both the contribution to the economy and coconut production,” Chandrakeerthi said, adding that at present, Sri Lanka ranks fourth among coconut-exporting countries and also among coconut-producing countries.
