Lawyers affiliated with the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) have strongly condemned the killing of Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his wife, urging authorities to conduct prompt investigations and implement stronger measures to combat violent crime.
In a statement issued on 15 February, the NPP Lawyers’ Association expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths, which occurred during a shooting on 13 February.
They described the attack as a “brutal and inhumane assault” on two citizens and emphasized that the incident highlights the urgent need to dismantle remnants of a “para-state” culture of violence that has persisted in the past.
The statement highlighted that such violence could target various segments of society, including journalists, police officers, judges, or lawyers. It underscored the government’s responsibility to ensure public safety and uphold the rule of law.
The lawyers called on authorities to accelerate investigations, prevent further crimes, and bring those responsible to justice without delay. They expressed confidence that the government would fulfill its duty to protect the dignity and security of all citizens.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the murders.
