Low pressure system persists in Bay of Bengal; 128 mm rainfall in Batticaloa

The Department of Meteorology reported that the highest rainfall yesterday, (17) was recorded at 128.9 mm in Batticaloa, Nuwara Eliya experienced the lowest temperature of 13.4°C. 


The Department has issued a weather alert, noting that a low-pressure area persists over the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal, southeast of Sri Lanka. 


Showers and thundershowers are expected at times in sea areas off the coast from Galle to Hambantota, extending to Trincomalee via Batticaloa. 


Scattered showers or thundershowers may occur in other coastal regions during the evening or night.


Winds could reach speeds of up to 50 kmph in certain sea areas, specifically off the coasts from Kalutara to Puttalam and Mannar, as well as from Matara to Hambantota and Pottuvil. 


Sea conditions in these regions may become rough or very rough at times, especially during thunderstorms when gusty winds and temporary rough seas are likely.
