Mosque bomb attack scare: Security tightened in Akurana and vicinity

20 Apr 2023 | BY Buddhika Samaraweera

Police security has been tightened in Akurana, Kandy, and in the surrounding mosques from Tuesday (18) night, following information that there is a risk of an attack on a mosque.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, an official of the Police Media Division said that several teams of Police officers have been deployed in Akurana and in the surrounding mosques since Tuesday night. He said that the special security arrangements have been made following information received through the 118 hotline operating under the Ministry of Defence that there is a possibility of an attack being carried out on a mosque or another form of disruptive activity. Following the receipt of the said piece of information, Police teams have been deployed in the vicinity of the Akurana Town as well as in the mosques in the area.

An Indian intelligence agency had previously informed the local authorities that there was an imminent series of attacks on churches, particularly those around Colombo on 21 April 2019, but the security agencies had not taken steps to beef up the security in and around churches. The non arrangement of security for churches eventually resulted in the occurrence of a few suicide bomb attacks on three Churches in Kochchikade, Katuwapitiya, and Batticaloa, three leading hotels in Colombo, and a motel in Dehiwala, which killed 269 persons and injured more than 500 others.
