Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) and Al-Futtaim Logistics have discussed expanding their business partnership, as shipping disruptions in the Middle East highlight the port’s role in transporting vehicles to Gulf markets.
The discussions included the CASCADIA RoRo Feeder Service, which connects Hambantota with vehicle supply chains serving the region. The service was launched on 9 June 2026.
According to an Al-Futtaim white paper, Hambantota was among three alternative gateways used to maintain vehicle shipments following disruption around the Strait of Hormuz in March 2026.
The three routes collectively transported more than 25,000 vehicles to the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. This figure represents the combined volume handled through all three gateways, not Hambantota alone.
The visiting delegation also expressed interest in investment opportunities at the port and its industrial park, according to HIPG.
