The Ministry of Education has finalised a comprehensive set of education reforms, with plans to initially implement changes in Grades 1 and 6 before gradually extending them to other grades.
Speaking to The Sunday Morning, an Education Ministry media official confirmed that the reforms, developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Education (NIE), were now complete.
An official inauguration is expected by the end of August or early September to formally introduce the reforms to the public.
The initiative aims to build a future-ready citizen, equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century while contributing to sustainable national development and peace.
The Ministry of Education has begun conducting provincial awareness programmes on the proposed education reforms set to be implemented from 2026, initially focusing on Grade 1 and Grade 6.
The first session was held on Friday (11) at the parliamentary complex, chaired by Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, with the participation of key Government and education sector officials.
The provincial programmes commenced yesterday (12) in Anuradhapura for the North Central Province, followed by the Eastern Province session in Trincomalee which is scheduled for today (13).
Additional programmes, scheduled for July and August across the remaining provinces, aim to brief officials on the key aspects of the reforms.
