- Willing to accommodate reforms until 1.30 p.m., threatens intensified action post-12 Dec. strike if 2 p.m. decision not reversed
In the midst of the ongoing dispute between the Education Ministry and teachers’ unions over the Government’s decision to extend school hours from next year (2026), the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) stated that any education reform should be implemented within the current school timetable, from 7.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., in a way that suits the existing structure.
Speaking to The Daily Morning, CTU President Priyantha Fernando said that the union would launch a one-day strike on 12 December as the first step in their union action. He warned that if the Government fails to reverse its decision even after the strike, the CTU would intensify its actions until the decision is withdrawn.
“We are not against educational reforms. But, all those reforms should be implemented within the normal school hours, not by extending the school day. The ministry did not have any discussion with us regarding these changes. This is something that they are going to do without carrying out any scientific or psychological study.”
The ministry has however maintained that there will be no change to its decision to extend school hours until 2 p.m. starting from January of next year (2026). Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa told The Daily Morning last week that although the unions are free to express their views and engage in discussions, the decision is final. “We can discuss the matter, but we can’t change this decision. It is final.”
