Davis Cup begins today

26 Jul 2023

HEAD:

Sri Lanka will once again host the 2023 edition of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group Ill event from 26 to 29 July at Sri Lanka Tennis Association Clay Courts in Colombo.

There will be a total number of eight teams participating, namely; Cambodia, Iran, Jordan, Malaysia, Pacific Oceania, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and the host nation – Sri Lanka.

The teams that secure the top three positions in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group III will advance to the Davis Cup World Group II playoffs. This is an opportunity for these teams to progress to higher levels of competition and potentially reach the prestigious World Cup stage.

For the first time in recent history, Sri Lanka, who have qualified from the zonal Group IV in 2022 to Group III, will field an all-young team.

The two leading campaigners this time in the five-member team are Thehan Wiiemanne and Chathurya Nilaweera, who both have an experience of mere nine ties between them.

Wilemanne made his Davis Cup debut in only 2020 while Nilaweera made his debut in 2021

The three other players of the team are Current Sri Lanka National Champion Ashen Silva who represented Sri Lanka team last year, Apna Perera, and Dhilvan Herath. All three players are yet to make their Davis Cup debut.
