The Point Pedro Urban Council has announced a complete ban on the use of polythene lunch sheets in hotels and food outlets within its limits, effective from 1 January, 2026.
Public Health Inspector (PHI) P. Dinesh said the decision was conveyed during a discussion with food business owners, noting that strict legal action will be taken against violators.
Establishments have been instructed to use eco-friendly alternatives such as banana, lotus, or teak leaves, while approved aluminium foil and food-grade containers are also permitted.
The Urban Council warned that penalties, including the suspension of business licenses, will be enforced against those who fail to comply.
