The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the submission of an amended directive to Parliament, making seat belts compulsory for every passenger in every seat of vehicles on expressways.
The measure aims to minimise deaths and severe injuries following an increase in accidents.
The amendment updates the Motor Vehicles Directive (Expressway) No. 02 of 2011 and was published in Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2455/29 on 25 September 2025.
The proposal was presented by the Acting Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development.
