Penal code amendment bans all forms of corporal punishment in schools

24 Sep 2025 | BY Staff Writer

The Penal Code amendment, which bans both physical and non-physical punishment in schools, is designed to prevent a child's emotional suffering, stated Minister of Childcare Saroja Paulraj.

Accordingly, the minister explained that while physical wounds from corporal punishment are visible, the emotional and psychological harm from non-physical punishments often remain hidden.

The new law aims to safeguard children from such unseen trauma, ensuring their well-being during and after disciplinary action.
