The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has called for an independent, transparent and impartial investigation into the Negombo Prison unrest.

In a statement, the BASL welcomed the appointment of an independent committee and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable through due legal process.

The association also called for urgent prison reforms, including measures to reduce overcrowding, improve remand practices and strengthen prison management.

It further urged authorities to ensure the safety of inmates and prison officers and provide medical assistance to those injured.
