Health Ministry declares ‘National Injury Prevention Week’

06 Jul 2025 | BY Staff Writer

The Ministry of Health has declared a National Injury Prevention Week, set to run from 7 to 11 July, with a focus on reducing injuries and raising awareness on safety across daily life settings.

Each day of the week highlights a specific area: road traffic accidents (7), workplace injuries (8), home and elderly care injuries (9), drowning (10), and school-related injuries (11).

According to the Ministry, 1 in 7 Sri Lankans sustains an injury requiring medical treatment annually, with 6 to 8 injuries occurring every minute. Injuries are among the top 10 causes of hospital deaths, with 10,000–12,000 annual fatalities, including 3,000 from suicide alone.

The initiative will include field inspections, public education campaigns, and the implementation of both short- and long-term strategies to mitigate risks, particularly targeting the 15–44 age group, which is the most affected demographic.
