The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Environment, Agriculture and Resource Sustainability has proposed that the Ministry consider producing eco-friendly paper bags to replace polythene.

The proposal follows a decision to charge consumers for polythene bags when purchasing goods. 

Committee Chairman, Member of Parliament Hector Appuhamy, questioned the measure's effectiveness in reducing polythene use.

Officials clarified to the Committee that the relevant Gazette notification does not specify that a payment must be made for polythene bags. 

The Committee is seeking a sustainable alternative to limit environmental damage.
