The Coconut Cultivation Board has reported that intermediaries are earning Rs. 40–50 per coconut by buying at Rs. 134 and selling at Rs. 180 at auctions.
Board Chairman Sunimal Jayakody attributed the high warehouse prices to the lack of a controlled price for coconuts and urged traders to release stocks at a minimum price to stabilize the market.
In response, the Coconut Cultivation Company, Coconut Development Board, and the Coconut Cultivation Board are preparing a joint recommendation for auctions.
Coconut production has risen from 2,754 million nuts last year to 2,800 million this year, with projections of 4,200 million nuts over the next three years under government-backed development initiatives.
The measures aim to ensure fair pricing, stabilize the market, and support the growth of Sri Lanka’s coconut industry.
