A shortage of psychiatrists is currently prevailing in Sri Lanka, Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Professor Chathurie Suraweera, stated.

She noted that the migration of psychiatrists overseas, particularly to Australia and the United Kingdom, has contributed to the shortage.

At present, there are around 100 to 120 psychiatrists in the country, including consultant psychiatrists and several other categories, she stated.

Professor Suraweera also stressed the importance of seeking treatment from a qualified doctor and a clinical psychologist when signs of a mental health condition are observed.
