Mama Pudditat, the cutest café serving freshly-baked cakes

28 Apr 2024 | By Marianne David

The cutest little cake café which serves freshly-baked cakes every day opened up recently in Pelawatte, on Pannipitiya Road.

Named Mama Pudditat after a mother cat in a story book who ran a bakery to make a living and feed her growing kittens, this little space is as adorable as the story behind its name and attracts customers at first sight.

It’s no surprise that the décor is so welcoming, given that Sathya Wimalasuriya, who heads the operation, is a designer by profession.

The café was opened just two weeks ago by Sathya and her mother Shantha Wimalasuriya, who is the baker in this business.

So what’s special about Mama Pudditat, given the scores of cafés serving cakes dotting Colombo?

“We wanted to give people fresh cakes every day,” said Sathya. “The response has been very good; people are very enthusiastic about freshly-baked cakes, since there aren’t many options for freshly-baked cakes over the counter. Here at Mama Pudditat, we bake every single day!”

The cakes on the Mama Pudditat shelves include butter cake, chocolate cake, date cake, cottage cake, and castella cake.

Having opened in time for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year two weeks ago, the fastest-moving cake has understandably proved to be the butter cake – a staple in Avurudu platters and when visiting family and friends.

However, right now the café is promoting its castella cake, which is a light and fluffy sponge cake that’s popular in Japan and is made with or without frosting at Mama Pudditat.

The café also serves coffee (Island Coffee) and ‘plain tea,’ which pairs perfectly with a slice of warm, freshly-baked cake – be it butter, date, or castella.

Slices are priced from Rs. 500 upwards while full cakes are priced from Rs. 1,500 upwards.

Mama Pudditat, however, is not only about cake. The café envisions becoming a place which is also about sharing moments and memories, which it aims to encourage with its welcoming space – small though it may be.

“We want to promote the concept of people gathering and sharing moments and memories in the evenings, over a slice of fresh cake and chilled coffee or hot tea – that is the target,” said Sathya.

Mama Pudditat is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., so drop in for a slice of freshly-baked cake still warm from the oven – a perfect little heart-warming treat.
