The Department of Irrigation has warned that major flooding is likely in the lower basin of the Mahaweli River following heavy rainfall across upstream catchment areas.
Based on water-level readings at the Manampitiya gauge station, authorities expect the river to rise to a critical flood level, posing a serious threat to low-lying communities.
The following Divisional Secretariat Divisions are at high risk:
• Dimbulagala
• Thamankaduwa
• Welikanda
• Lankapura
• Medirigiriya
• Seruwila
• Kanthale
• Kinniya
• Muttur
Residents living close to the Mahaweli River in these areas have been urged to remain highly vigilant and take immediate precautions to protect life and property.
People in flood-prone zones are strongly advised to evacuate early if water levels continue to rise.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and relevant local authorities are on alert, and emergency services have been mobilised to respond to any worsening conditions.
