She’s a devoted member of the Soul Sounds Academy Choir, demonstrating exceptional commitment. Anishka is also part of the K-pop-inspired group Blue Moon, where she finds creative inspiration. Beyond music, she is a skilled drummer, a brown belt in karate, and a keen netball player. Anishka’s journey is marked by talent, dedication, and a supportive family.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first discovered your passion for singing?

I am a 14-year-old composer, songwriter, and singer whose love for music runs deep in my veins. Music has always been a significant part of my life because I grew up listening to various genres – be it country music from my grandparents, Western pop and hard rock from my parents, K-pop from my aunt or angelic gospel music and hymns from my church. I first discovered my passion for song through my family get-togethers. Karaoke was something we all engaged in and encouraged, giving me the confidence I channel in my performances today.

What was it like performing on Rupavahini and collaborating with Mario Ananda?

To be honest, collaborating with Mario Aiya was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. At first, I remember being quite nervous; because I had no idea of what to expect, but Mario aiya was friendly and welcoming, so the memory of being on TV is one I’m bound to never forget.

Could you share a memorable experience from your time performing with the Soul Sounds Academy Choir?

The Soul Sounds Academy Choir gave me cherished memories, with pre-concert rehearsals standing out as the best. Soundarie David Rodrigo and her team’s dedication pushed us beyond limits, ensuring stellar performances. Their support led to my role as Sandra Dee in ‘Grease,’ directed by Kevin Cruz of Cold Theatre Productions. I’m thankful to both for this incredible opportunity.

Being part of the girl group ‘Blue Moon’ must be exciting. What inspired you to join a K-pop-inspired group, and what’s your favourite song you’ve performed with them?

Joining Blue Moon, founded by my friend Vishvi Weerawardana, has been transformative. We share a passion for K-pop, especially BTS, BLACKPINK, and Stray Kids, and we admire their dedication. We aim to emulate their journey, turning our shared interests into something meaningful. Performing ‘Sure Thing’ by Miguel, particularly BLACKPINK’s version, is a favourite experience. Their unique twist resonated deeply with us, making it a special experience.

You sang a heartfelt Sinhala song at just 13. Can you tell us the story behind that song and what it means to you?

The song ‘Maha Monawado Aduwak’ by Rev. Fr. Assisi (OMI) is deeply emotional, highlighting how material possessions pale in comparison to a child’s need for parental love. This concept profoundly touched me, reinforcing my belief that a parent’s love and affection are the most precious gifts.

As for my original music, I draw inspiration from personal experiences, infusing my lyrics with genuine emotions. Music, to me, serves as a vehicle for expressing my innermost feelings, whether they’re sombre and hidden or joyous and exuberant.

How did you get into drumming, and do you have a favourite style to play on the drums?

Growing up, I explored various instruments like piano and melodica but didn’t find the satisfaction I sought. In early 2020, my father and I delved into drumming, finding it fascinating. Within two weeks, we enrolled in lessons at Music Matters with Sumudi Suraweera and Niroshan Fernando. We soon acquired our drum set. Drumming lets me unleash my creativity. I especially enjoy the shuffle beat and the six-eight beat, which allow me to produce unique rhythms.

How has martial arts influenced your life and personal development?

Learning karate under the training of sensei Edward helped me gain an understanding of precision and discipline; not only when it comes to physical activity and strenuous sports but when it comes to my life as a whole. It helps me to understand and develop myself mentally.

What do you enjoy most about playing netball, and how do you balance it with your other interests?

Playing netball teaches valuable teamwork, utilising both strengths and weaknesses for success. It sharpens the mind, aiding in achieving hard-earned victories. Balancing it with other interests is easier due to my supportive parents and grandmother. Despite my passion, I’m taking a break this year to focus on my upcoming Ordinary Level exams.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations or dreams for your singing career? Is there a particular milestone or achievement you’re aiming for?

Looking ahead in my singing career, I hope to win a Grammy for one of my songs; specifically for either Best New Artist or Best Group Performance with Blue Moon. I also hope to collaborate with some of my favourite artists, such as Melanie Martinez, Olivia Rodrigo, Conan Gray, and so many more. If I continue to list them, I might never stop.

Are there any artists or musicians who have inspired your singing style or songwriting?

Many artists have influenced my style and writing, but to name them specifically, I would say, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Melanie Martinez, and BTS as their songs convey immensely relatable emotional experiences. As I said before, these are what I find bring life to my songs as well, as these artists write from the heart.

How do you manage your time effectively to pursue your passions while also maintaining your academic responsibilities?

Balancing my passions is possible due to my supportive family, who always strive for my best. Their unwavering encouragement helps me maintain an equilibrium between academics and my pursuits. Additionally, following a timetable and prioritising tasks daily aids in effective time management, ensuring I stay on track.
