For the first time in history, Wesley College won the coveted Blazé Trophy for the fourth time in a row, beating Kingswood College 46-10 at Longden Place yesterday (16). This was the season’s curtain-closure game for both teams.
Asanka Gammanpila (1998) and Sandul Gammanpila (2025) became the first father-son duo to captain Wesley to win a Blazé Trophy.
Danush Dassanayake, arguably the biggest centre in the school circuit, opened the scoring for Wesley. Abdul Haadhi added the extras.
Rivin Baudaween scored a drop goal to put Kingswood on the scoreboard.
In the process, Wesley’s Keshara Rahul was sent to the naughty chair for continuous offsides. Dassanayake, playing in a match to remember, scored the second try as Kingswood tried to play too much rugby in their red zone.
Seconds later Prarthana Rodrigo scored his try of the season, running riot with a 50 m blitz.
Haadhi converted both tries. Rodrigo yet again scored courtesy of a splendid move orchestrated by Haadhi.
Half-time: WCC 26 (4T 3C)-KCK 03 (1P)
Dassanayake, losing his temper, saw a yellow card in the opening minutes of the second half. Pawan Thiranagama (WCC) hit the nail on the coffin of Kingswood, scoring the fifth try.
Sachintha Naveesha finally scored the breakthrough try for Kingswood with Baudaween scoring a peach of a corner flag conversion. Hamdan Safraz scored for Les Blues to seal the deal in the 53rd minute.
Roars of Zum Zum Zaké echoed at Longden Place as M. Fawaz barged over for the seventh try. M.S. Wadood added the final try for Wesley.
This seals the 10th win in the series for Wesley, with Kingswood leading with 23 victories and four drawn encounters.
