Three young Sri Lankan racing drivers recorded three race victories, a podium finish and a top-10 result at the opening round of the MRF Indian National Racing Challenge, held recently at the Madras International Circuit.

Kaveen Rajapaksha, Aadam Junaid and Saurika Livindu competed in the Formula LGB 1300 Junior class from 21 to 23 August. All three drivers race for Sri Lanka’s Mora Racing and joined India’s Momentum Motorsports for the championship weekend.

The weekend began with qualifying, with Kaveen starting 13th on the grid, followed by Saurika in 14th and Aadam in 15th.

Kaveen produced the strongest overall performance, winning all three Junior-class races. His results came after a consistent weekend in which he adapted to the demands of the Chennai circuit.

Aadam and Saurika faced mechanical problems during the weekend, with engine issues disrupting their races and resulting in multiple retirements.

Aadam recovered to finish third in Race 2, securing a podium finish despite the problems that affected his weekend.

Saurika finished ninth in Race 3, ending the round with a top-10 result.

The results mark a significant outing for the three Sri Lankan drivers as they continue to gain experience outside the country’s domestic racing scene.

Through Mora Racing’s Formula 1300 programme, Kaveen, Aadam and Saurika have developed their skills in Sri Lanka before competing internationally. Their participation with Momentum Motorsports provided them with an opportunity to race against a wider field in India.

The opening round also highlighted the challenges faced by young drivers competing at international level, with the Sri Lankan trio recording strong results despite mechanical difficulties and challenging starting positions.
