The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) called on the Government to suspend what it describes as illegal disciplinary measures against its office bearers and other union leaders, warning of a potential island-wide strike if these issues are not resolved by the end of the week.
Speaking to the media yesterday (11), GMOA Media Spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesighe announced that the GMOA would initiate a nationwide strike on 18 September if their concerns are not addressed. Dr. Wijesighe criticised the Ministry of Health for allegedly launching disciplinary action against GMOA Assistant Secretary and UVa Province Coordinator Dr. Palitha Rajapaksha without a formal complaint. He claimed, "The disciplinary action against Dr. Rajapaksha has reportedly been taken without any formal complaint or proper allegations. This kind of behaviour from the Ministry is both unjustified and unprofessional."
“Dr. Rajapaksha spoke on behalf of the people of this country. He was talking about the impact from the lack of medicines and equipment at the Badulla Hospital and surrounding hospitals,” he added. He further stated that it has been decided to display black flags in all hospitals for seven consecutive days from yesterday onwards. He further expressed concern that such actions would discourage health professionals from remaining in the country amidst a significant exodus of doctors. "These intimidations are unacceptable and will only exacerbate the current situation," he warned. Dr. Wijesighe also suggested that there might be an “invisible force” behind these actions, which could lead to the collapse of the free healthcare system and erode public trust in it.
