United States Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor has arrived in Sri Lanka for a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and regional ties.
According to the US State Department, Gor’s visit, scheduled from 19 to 24 March, includes meetings with senior Sri Lankan leaders to reaffirm the importance of the US-Sri Lanka relationship and enhance cooperation in key sectors.
Discussions are expected to focus on safeguarding vital sea lanes, securing ports, and reinforcing trade and commercial ties, as well as advancing a “free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific”.
Following his engagements in Sri Lanka, Gor will travel to the Maldives, where he is due to meet senior government officials to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to the bilateral relationship.
Talks in the Maldives will focus on advancing security cooperation, supporting critical infrastructure development, and exploring opportunities to expand the country’s economy. The visit will also mark 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Maldives.
“The United States values its enduring partnerships with Sri Lanka and Maldives and our shared commitment to regional security and stability,” the State Department said in a statement.
It is worth noting that Gor currently serves as the United States Ambassador to India, having presented his credentials in January 2026. He was nominated to the role by President Donald Trump and previously served in the Trump administration, including as Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office.
