Special dengue eradication programs to begin tomorrow

05 May 2026 | BY Staff Writer

A significant increase in dengue cases has been reported across Sri Lanka, as intermittent rainfall has created ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. To date, the country has recorded 25,846 dengue infections this year, with the death toll reaching 12.

Among the deceased are two children under the age of 12, heightening concerns among health officials and communities alike.

In response, the National Dengue Control Unit of Sri Lanka (NDCU) announced that specialized dengue eradication programs will commence tomorrow (6) in high-risk zones. The districts of Colombo, Gampaha, and Galle, which have experienced the highest incidence rates, will be the primary focus.

Dr. Prashila Samaraweera, a Consultant Specialist at the NDCU, stated that these efforts will include intensive fogging, community awareness campaigns, and the elimination of mosquito breeding sites.

The goal is to reduce the spread of dengue and safeguard vulnerable groups, especially children.

Health authorities continue to urge residents to adopt preventive measures, such as removing standing water, using mosquito nets, and seeking medical attention promptly if symptoms of dengue appear.

The government has also called on local communities to actively participate in the collective effort to combat this escalating public health issue.
