Environmental issues: Measures for Colombo’s water bodies, canals

Acknowledging that the deteriorating condition of water bodies, particularly canals in Colombo and its suburbs, is becoming a serious environmental issue, the Deputy Environment Minister Anton Jayakody said that serious attention would be paid to the matter and that necessary measures would be taken.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, he said that several environmental problems have emerged in relation to water bodies such as the Beira and Diyawanna Lakes. He noted that methane gas generated in the water bodies has resulted in foul odours, with fluctuations in oxygen levels and the accumulation of waste contributing to other environmental issues, including the spread of algae and difficult living conditions for fish.

"Efforts are already underway in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency to improve the conditions in the Beira Lake. We intend to intensify our focus on similar issues affecting other urban water bodies. We expect to pay serious attention to these matters and take necessary action. Just two days ago, we conducted an awareness programme for the relevant institutions," he said.

The condition of canals and waterways in urban areas, particularly in Colombo, has drawn public attention in recent years. Water bodies connected to prominent locations such as the Colombo Floating Market, the Beira Lake and sections of the City's canal network have frequently been affected by the dumping of solid waste, wastewater discharges and poor maintenance.
